rhinoWhat Is Rhinoplasty in Atlanta?

As the largest protrusion on your face, your nose can garner a lot of attention. And if your nose is particularly crooked, too large, or too small, it can cause embarrassment and reduced self-esteem. With rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery or a “nose job,” you can correct these issues.

Common Reasons for Rhinoplasty

  • Traumatic injury to the nose or nasal passages
  • Breathing obstruction
  • Congenital nose deformity
  • Cosmetic enhancement

Different Types of Rhinoplasty and Why they Matter

Each type of rhinoplasty (nose job) has different techniques involved, but there are two main techniques for surgical rhinoplasty, either open or closed. The closed rhinoplasty has no visible external incisions is often used when only minor changes to the nose are needed, such as removing a small hump.  The open rhinoplasty is often used for more difficult noses or revision cases when better access is needed.  This technique allows a rhinoplasty surgeon to make greater changes such as removing a large hump, correcting a crooked nose, or enhancing the nose tip.

Primary Rhinoplasty

A primary rhinoplasty refers to the first surgery a nose has ever had.  It is very important to choose a rhinoplasty surgeon wisely even for a primary rhinoplasty as this is your best chance of getting the best natural looking result.  Specific goals and desires should be communicated with your rhinoplasty surgeon will help ensure that your nose is done right the first time.

Secondary Or Revision Rhinoplasty

Sometimes a secondary or revision rhinoplasty is needed to fix a flawed primary rhinoplasty, which occurs in about 5%-20% of rhinoplasty cases. Revision rhinoplasty is more complex than a primary rhinoplasty due to scar tissue and lack of remaining tissue inside the nose for reconstruction.  In most cases of revision rhinoplasty, the nose has can be rebuilt using a patient’s own tissue grafts from the patient’s own nasal septum, ear cartilage, and rib cartilage.  Dr. Huynh also often use a type of tissue called fascia harvested from the temple area or behind the ear in revision rhinoplasty.  Occasionally, bone tissue or artificial implant may also be needed if cartilage tissue is not available.

African-American Rhinoplasty & Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a top cosmetic procedure among African Americans and Hispanics. Since different ethnic groups have noses with distinct characteristics, ethnic rhinoplasty requires an individualized approach.

African-Americans and Hispanics have broader, flatter noses and thicker skin, which often makes refining the nasal tip more challenging.  African Americans tend to have shorter nasal bones, requiring special care. Typical requests of patients often include a narrower nose, which means a less is more approach, by lifting the bridge and narrowing the nostrils.  When it comes to African American Rhinoplasty, simple changes, rather than dramatic ones, often equate with better aesthetic outcomes.

Hispanic Americans and Latinos typically have more anatomical variations than any other ethnic groups, due to their diverse origins. Typical requests include fixing a cleft, reducing a bump, lifting a droopy nose or narrowing a tip.

Simply put, it takes skill and sensitivity to achieve a cosmetic result that enhances natural beauty while preserving ethnicity. Dr. Huynh realizes the significance of preserving cultural identity and possesses comprehensive proficiency working with such diverse features.  He is experienced with African American rhinoplasty and has helped many individuals to get the nose they’ve always wanted.

Asian Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty in Asians often required a unique skill set and awareness of Asian cultural ideals of beauty.  Many Asians have characteristic noses with a very low bridge (dorsum), weak and bulbous tip (due to very thin cartilage framework under the skin), and wide flaring nostrils.  These are the three main areas to be closely evaluated during your rhinoplasty consultation.  Dr. Huynh has experience with implant materials such as silicone and ePTFE as well as using patient’s own tissue for augmentation and structural grafts.  Natural cartilage graft can be harvested from the patient’s nasal septum (structure dividing the left and right nares), back of the ears, or rib depending on the amount of cartilage needed.  Each patient’s nose is unique and Dr. Huynh will discuss these options with you to determine which is best for your case.

Before surgery, Dr. Huynh will use digital photo and computer imaging software to communicate the desired look for your nose. Most often, rhinoplasty is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia for better breathing regulation. In most cases involving a reduction in shape or size of the nose, angle, or removal of a hump, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying skeleton of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped, and the skin re-draped over the surface. Patients normally recover from rhinoplasty in one to three weeks.
