Increase in Facial Plastic Surgery Due to Rise of Social Media

Facial Plastic Surgery, Atlanta Surgical Arts, Atlanta, GAAccording to the 2014 Statistics on Trends in Facial Plastic Surgery by the AAFPRS (American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Inc.), “13 percent of facial plastic surgeons surveyed saw an increase in requests for celebrity procedures in 2014, up from 3 percent in 2013 and 7 percent in 2012.”

According to the respondents, in 2014, patients wanted to have the facial features of specific celebrities:

  1. Angelina Jolie’s lips and cheekbones
  2. Beyoncé’s facial structure
  3. Kim Kardashian’s eyes and jawline
  4. Brad Pitt’s nose
  5. Natalie Portman’s nose

According to a recent report, “1 in 4 Americans want plastic surgery.” In fact, if money was not an issue, “a fifth of men and over a third of women would want to get cosmetic surgery.”

What has brought about the increase in facial plastic surgery recently?

  1. The selfie craze

AAFPRS reports that there was an increase in requests for aesthetic procedures that was brought about by the “selfie” craze, especially among people under 30. The sale of over 100,000 selfie sticks in December 2014 alone proves that this craze will not be slowing any time soon. So, the increase in the number of people wanting to have facial plastic surgery may still increase.

  1. People want to look good on social media

Social media sites focus on photos. People these days want to see what their friends in high school or college look like now. For this reason, everyone wants to look good on social media.

  1. Plastic surgery as gifts for graduates

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that in 2013, more than 11 million surgeries were performed costing over 12 billion dollars. A team of surgeons explained that the increase may be due to, “the number of operations it performs around peak graduation times, including the months of April, May, and June.” More parents are now giving their kids plastic surgery as graduation gifts perhaps as a way to motivate them.

  1. People who join dating websites want to look beautiful

Men and women who join dating websites want to make sure that they look attractive. After all, they go to these sites with hopes of finding a partner. Some of these men and women will do whatever it takes to look beautiful, so they undergo plastic surgery.
