Double chin or submental fullness is a condition associated with subcutaneous fat in the area under the chin. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), “67% of their respondents are bothered by under-the-chin fullness or double chin.”
What causes double chin/submental fullness?
Double chin is caused by different factors:
- Weight gain
Weight gain is perhaps the most common cause of double chin. When you gain weight, the musculus mylohyoideus, which is the muscle under the chin, also plumps up and forms the double chin.
As you get older, muscles all over your body begin to lose elasticity. The muscle under your chin loses elasticity as well. For some people, this also results in a double chin.
There are some people who have a hereditary predisposition to having a double chin. They develop a double chin even if they are young and live a healthy lifestyle.
A healthy diet and regular exercise may help prevent a double chin. But, for others, especially those who are predisposed to have a double chin, medical treatments or procedures are the best solutions for getting rid of submental fullness.
What treatments/procedures can help remove double chin and what are their benefits?
This procedure can be performed with a local anesthetic. Dr. Huynh will make a small incision under the chin and insert a small stainless steel tube (cannula) and suction out the fat from between the skin and muscle. This will create small tunnels through the fat layer that will collapse after the operation.
This is a relatively minimally-invasive procedure that allows patients to avoid a long recovery that other anesthesia-related liposuction requires. Patients may return to work immediately after chin liposuction.
Just like chin liposuction, this procedure can be performed using local anesthesia. Dr. Huynh will make one or two tiny incisions under the chin or behind the ears. He will insert a small cannula and suction out the excess fat.
Patients can return to work within one week and can perform regular activities after about two weeks.
This is an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Dr. Huynh will make a small incision behind each ear and may make a third one under the chin. He will tighten the neck muscles and/or underlying tissues. This will remove excess, sagging skin and restore the neck to its smooth, firm and youthful appearance.
Generally, patients return to work and their regular activities within two weeks after surgery.
According to the FDA, Kybella™ is identical to deoxycholic acid, something that the body makes to help absorb fats.
Kybella™ is an injectable drug – the first “fat-buster” injection that has been approved by the FDA. When it is injected into the double chin, it will disrupt the fat cell membrane. As soon as it hits, it destroys the cell membrane. After that, the fat cell releases its fatty contents, and the body metabolizes these fatty contents as normal.
If you want to get rid of your double chin, and exercise and diet do not seem to work, consider consulting a highly-skilled plastic surgeon who understands the unique needs of each patient.
